Mens 1960s Fashion

Ideas and advice on 1960's men's fashion.

What did men wear in the 60's?

Men's fashion in the 1960's saw a number of different trends. The 60's were a decade that changed many fashion ideas, it was the start of a far more open approach to clothing and fashion. This was especially true for men who until this time had only really had the business suit, shirt and tie with little other inspiration.

Men's 1960's fashion.

The 1960's is probably most known for changing the way in which men's 60's clothing was seen, especially for men as it opened up such a diverse way of dressing.
Men and women now started seeing clothing as a way to show off their individualism.
Many of the 1960's trends set the stage for current fashion, so much of what we wear now has its roots in the 1960's designs.
A vast majority of sixties fashion was so ground breaking for the time that modern fashion wouldn't be what it is today without the vision of many 1960's designers.

1960's period shows like Mad Men show that the men really had taken to smart stylish fashions, many of which still stand the test of time today.

In the early to mid 60's, the Mods emerged, defining popular fashion for young British men.
Men's fashion during the early 1960's was heavily influenced by Italian designers, the modernists ( Mods) admired the style and elegance of the Italians.
Men's 1960's suits became more slim fitting than ever before, often in pale colours with narrow lapels worn with narrow collared shirts and thin ties.
The Mods showed that men could care about the clothes they wore and look stylish and smart without looking like a clone, they didn't want to look like their dads.

This attitude encouraged much change in men’s fashion as the 60's progressed, London was the capital of much of this change.
Designers saw that young men wanted more choice in what to wear, this lead to a real boom in men's clothing sales.
Men started spending much of their weekly wages on their wardrobes, wanting the next new thing out. Style was hugely important for the Mods.

In the mid to late 1960's the Dandy Edwardian look was popular, with men's fashion taking on a softer look.
Men wore double breasted suits made of crushed velvet or bold striped fabrics, fancy brocade waistcoats, frilled collar shirts and cravats, the peacock revolution had started.
Mod wasn't the only influence on men's styles, in the mid 1960's the hippies were introducing an "anything goes" philosophy that allowed for greater choice in clothing.

Hippy clothing was a whole new look, bright and colourful men's suits many in geometric designs along with flared trousers and much wider lapels on the jackets.
Wide kipper ties, belts and jacket lapels got wider, shirt collars got longer and wider and trousers became flared all kinds of bold patterns and colourful psychedelic prints.
London's Carnaby street and Kings Road were fashion capitals, celebrities shopped, hung out and set trends on Carnaby street. Much of the world followed suit.

Much of the men's fashion of the late 1960's followed over to the 1970's and is still often revisited for today's trends in fashion.
