History of the Bow Tie

The classic bow tie has gained popularity with gentlemen folk, old and young over the last few years.
At one time the bow ties was seen as old fashioned neck-wear for geography teachers, mad professors and stuffy old men, but not anymore!

History of the bow tie.
The classic bow tie dates back to the 1700's, when they were first worn by upper crust gentleman.
The bow tie gets is name from the French word, jabot, a type of 19th century lace cravat.
In the 18th and 19th centuries, gentleman's bow ties came in various fabrics and designs.
The classic black bow tie dates to 1886, when the dinner suit arrived on the scene and it became expected wear for a black bow tie to be worn with a dinner suit.

Today, the colours and designs of men's bow ties are endless. Bow ties come in many fabrics including silk, satin, wool, tweed and velvet.
Many men are now shunning neck ties and wearing bow ties, reviving the bow tie as a stylish and fashionable alternative to men's neck-wear.
Bow tie tying can be daunting for some men, but pre-tied and clip on bow ties are available for men preferring to forgo doing it themselves.
That said, it really is very simple to tie a freestyle bow tie.
Less common are single ended bow ties, these are rarely seen nowadays although we do get quite a few vintage ones.
